A SERIES of STUDIES at the CHURCH

March 18, 2020 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

St Kilda Uniting Church A series of studies at the church

Church Elders recently conducted an informal survey of people in their care. The reason for the survey was to help us determine if and when people might be interested in being involved in learning more about what Christian faith in the 21st Century might look like.

What emerged from the survey was some keen interest in exploring the relevance of the bible for our faith. Combined with other information gained from the survey we have decided to host several 6-week bursts of study on a Wednesday evening starting at 6pm in the church building. Our first ‘burst’ of study will run from 11 March to 22 April. Study will commence at 6pm finishing at 7pm. A cup of tea and nibbles will be available from 5.30.

There will be roughly the same period of time between bursts of study.

Themes for the studies at the church

Four themes have surfaced very quickly and will be conducted in the following order:

The Parables of Jesus

Parables are generally regarded as representing authentic thoughts and words of Jesus. How are they relevant for faith in today’s society?

The Book of Revelation

This book which comes at the end of the Christian New Testament has become for many either the book to be feared or the book to avoid. I think it is neither of those. So, what does it offer us in 2020?

The ‘titles’ of Jesus

Throughout the Christian New Testament Jesus is given many titles and names. Some have their origin in the Hebrew Bible and some arose out of the period between the two testaments – the intertestamental period. This period is about 400 years: after Malachi 420 BCE and early 1st Century CE (Christian Era). The period is sometimes called the ‘silent 400 years’. Jesus only ever used one name for himself.

The ‘Jesus Movement’

Context is important. In recent years more and more people have spent time studying the historical, political, cultural and social context of the period in which Jesus was exercising his public ministry in the Galilee region. Study related to the ‘Jesus Movement’ has been very enlightening. This particular ‘burst’ of study will highlight some of the key features of this important work.

We would love to see you at any of these studies. If you have friends, you think might be interested then ask them to come along as well. If you have any questions, please talk to me or an Elder.

Shalom
