SUMMARY:A SERIES of BIBLE STUDIES on ZOOM
DESCRIPTION:After a thoughtful discussion with members of the congregation\, Church Council has decided for Temporary Closures Due to Corona Virus for this and next events. However\, we will have a Zoom Bible study on May 20th.\nWEDNESDAY BIBLE STUDY – The Book of Revelation: session 5\nLast week we had a candid look at how the misuse of Apocalyptic material has produced one of the more disturbing periods in US political history\, and how the current President influenced by a particular cohort of Evangelical Christians within the Whitehouse administration are pursuing a very dangerous course for the world. (Slides and notes are available if you would like to receive them). \nThis Wednesday will be a little gentler as we explore some of the numbers and images used in the Book. \nHow can you join Zoom Bible study?\nIf you wish to be added to the list of participants\, let me know and I will make sure you receive an invitation to join the Zoom session. Email goes out around 5.45pm for a 6pm start. \nIf you would like to join this study session send an email thru contact form and I will send you the invitation that you will need to access the on-line meeting. \nDavid

DESCRIPTION:After a thoughtful discussion with members of the congregation\, Church Council has decided for Temporary Closures Due to Corona Virus for this and next events. However\, we will have a Zoom Bible study on April 29th.\nWednesday Bible Study – The Book of Revelation: session 2\nHaving spent session 1 in some kind of ‘background briefing’ and appreciating the importance of Ephesus and the imposition of the emperor’s Imperial Cult ( the worship of the emperor and his predecessors) we will now turn our attention to the structure of Apocalyptic writing in general and the Book of Revelation specifically. We will have a quick look at the role of archetype in apocalyptic literature in preparation for session 3 when Robert will lead us into a deeper exploration of archetype and other insights. \nIf you are not involved already and would like to receive an invitation link just let me know and I will add you to the list. \n  \nKeep well \nDavid \nHow can you join Zoom Bible study?\nIf you would like to join this study session send an email thru contact form and I will send you the invitation that you will need to access the on-line meeting. \n*******************************************************************************************************************

SUMMARY:A SERIES of STUDIES at the CHURCH
DESCRIPTION:After a thoughtful discussion with members of the congregation\, Church Council has decided for Temporary Closures Due to Corona Virus for this and next events.\nChurch Elders recently conducted an informal survey of people in their care. The reason for the survey was to help us determine if and when people might be interested in being involved in learning more about what Christian faith in the 21st Century might look like. \nWhat emerged from the survey was some keen interest in exploring the relevance of the bible for our faith. Combined with other information gained from the survey we have decided to host several 6-week bursts of study on a Wednesday evening starting at 6pm in the church building. Our first ‘burst’ of study will run from 11 March to 22 April. Study will commence at 6pm finishing at 7pm. A cup of tea and nibbles will be available from 5.30. \nThere will be roughly the same period of time between bursts of study. \n************************************************************************************************** \nBIBLE STUDY ON THE PARABLES: SESSION 6            \nLast study on understanding the Parables will be this WEDNESDAY 15th April at 5.45 pm. By exploring and understanding the social and political context of the time\, I hope to bring to life the parables and reveal their deeper meaning. I have spent much of my ministry life reading and studying the historical and social context of what is known as the intertestamental period  – the period between the ‘end’ of the Hebrew texts and the beginning of the Christian texts\, especially the life and values of the rural poor among whom Jesus exercised his private and public ministry. \nIf you would like to join this study session please contact us before Wednesday and I will send you the invitation that you will need to access the on-line meeting. David Pargeter \n It has been decided to continue the Bible Studies on Wednesday evenings without taking a break. More information next week. \n************************************************************************************************** \nThemes for the studies at the church\nFour themes have surfaced very quickly and will be conducted in the following order: \nThe Parables of Jesus\nParables are generally regarded as representing authentic thoughts and words of Jesus. How are they relevant for faith in today’s society? \nThe Book of Revelation\nThis book which comes at the end of the Christian New Testament has become for many either the book to be feared or the book to avoid. I think it is neither of those. So\, what does it offer us in 2020? \nThe ‘titles’ of Jesus\nThroughout the Christian New Testament Jesus is given many titles and names. Some have their origin in the Hebrew Bible and some arose out of the period between the two testaments – the intertestamental period. This period is about 400 years: after Malachi 420 BCE and early 1st Century CE (Christian Era). The period is sometimes called the ‘silent 400 years’. Jesus only ever used one name for himself. \nThe ‘Jesus Movement’\nContext is important. In recent years more and more people have spent time studying the historical\, political\, cultural and social context of the period in which Jesus was exercising his public ministry in the Galilee region. Study related to the ‘Jesus Movement’ has been very enlightening. This particular ‘burst’ of study will highlight some of the key features of this important work. \n  \nWe would love to see you at any of these studies. If you have friends\, you think might be interested then ask them to come along as well. If you have any questions\, please talk to me or an Elder. \n  \nShalom \nDavid

SUMMARY:Zoom EASTER Sunday Service
DESCRIPTION:With regret\, our Sunday services in the church have been suspended until such time as the Government and public health authorities deem it safe to resume. However\, every Sunday morning we will have a Zoom congregational meeting as a faith community. \nThis Sunday\, EASTER SUNDAY\, we gather again online.\nA memory has given me an idea for how we might celebrate Easter in lock-down mode. \nA few years ago\, I attended an Easter Service in London hosted by a pan-African community. It was an amazing experience\, not for its theological emphasis ( that left me quite unmoved) but for the sensational quality and colour of the hats and head-scarves that people wore to the event. \nSo\, here’s the idea – I’m inviting you to join the on-line service in the most colourful head-wear you can muster – but only if you want to –  males and females. \nSee you on SUNDAY AT 10.30 AM – access will be available from 10.15am \n\nHow can you join Zoom worship?\nOn Sunday at 10.15 am\, I will send an email to everyone who usually attends\, with the intention of starting at 10.30. \nHow to connect via Zoom?\nClick on the link in your email and away you go. It’s almost as simple as that. You can use any device – desktop\, laptop\, iPad / tablet\, mobile phone. I’m sure we will experience a few glitches but we will sort them out as we go along. \nIf anyone would like to join the Sunday Zoom congregation\, please contact us before Sunday. \n‘See’ you on Sunday in time of isolation. SUMMARY:A SERIES of BIBLE STUDIES on ZOOM
DESCRIPTION:After a thoughtful discussion with members of the congregation\, Church Council has decided for Temporary Closures Due to Corona Virus for this and next events. However\, we will have a Zoom Bible study on April 8th.\n\nBIBLE STUDY ON THE PARABLES: SESSION 5\nOn Wednesday 8 April at 5.45 we gather on-line for our 5 th session on understanding the parables. By exploring and understanding the social and political context of the time\, I hope to bring to life the parables and reveal their deeper meaning. I have spent much of ministry life reading and study the historical and social context of what is known as the intertestamental period – the period between the ‘end’ of the Hebrew texts and the beginning of the Christian texts\, especially the life and values of the rural poor among whom Jesus exercised his private and public ministry. \nHow can you join Zoom Bible study?\nIf you would like to join this study session send an email thru contact form and I will send you the invitation that you will need to access the on-line meeting. \n******************************************************************************************************************* \nChurch Elders recently conducted an informal survey of people in their care. \n******************************************************************************************************************* \nThemes for the studies at the church\nFour themes have surfaced very quickly and will be conducted in the following order: \nThe Parables of Jesus\nParables are generally regarded as representing authentic thoughts and words of Jesus.

SUMMARY:Zoom Sunday Service
DESCRIPTION:After a thoughtful discussion with members of the congregation\, Church Council has decided for Temporary Closures Due to Corona Virus for this and next events. However\, every Sunday morning we will have a Zoom congregational meeting as a faith community. \n  \nSunday – the first day of Holy Week\nIt’s also the day on which we usually celebrate communion together. Now I know that this is one of those\nactivities in our worshipping lives that bring us together and not just as a local faith community but as a\nglobal faith community. Around the world in different cultures and languages people of the Christian Faith\nbreak bread and share wine – and they do this to remember the life of Jesus\, to demonstrate solidarity with\nhis ministry and to symbolise that we are part of a much larger body of faith which stretches back through\nhistory. \nSo\, in preparation for this ZOOM Sunday meeting please have in front of you a small glass of wine or juice\,\nwater\, milk or whatever\, and a piece of bread. We will celebrate communion together. \nHow can you join Zoom worship?\nOn Sunday at 10.15 am\, I will send an email to everyone who usually attends\, with the intention of starting at 10.30. Meanwhile\, take care and L’Chiam – for life! \nRegards\nDavid \n

SUMMARY:Book Launch - A Kimberley Collaboration
DESCRIPTION:This story of a significant Kimberley collaboration was written by Robert Hoskin\, who has been relating with the people of Mowanjum for twenty years and recently authored Return to Majaddin\, the story of an Aboriginal Elder and his family. \nA Kimberley Collaboration describes how a volunteer network engaged with families from Mowanjum\, an Aboriginal community in the Kimberley\, WA. In 2008\, members of the network were invited to help respond to the high number of youth suicides in the community. This resulted in the organisation of holiday programs for children and young people and in extensive community development efforts\, raising over $7 million dollars. \nThe book shares the story of this collaboration in the hope that it might generate ideas for similar initiatives across Australia. \nThe Book launch will be held on Friday\, 21 February 2020\, close to the new office of the Borderlands Cooperative\, at the Victoria University Community Hub at MetroWest Centre\, 138 Nicholson Street\, Footscray. The launch will be held at around 6.15 pm\, following the Borderlands AGM which begins 5.30 pm.
